The World’s Most Expensive Coffee, Kopi Luwak

Kopi Luwak, the name of which coffee lovers have started to hear frequently, is also the most expensive coffee in the world. The coffee is repulsive when you first hear it, but many people are reluctant to drink it due to its production, and critics receive mixed reviews.

Luwak coffee, known as the most expensive coffee in the world, is made from civet cat feces.

The first thing the locals noticed about the civet cat, whose homeland is Indonesia, was that they eat coffee fruits. These cats were masters at picking the best coffee berries. The second thing that surprised them was that cats who consumed coffee berries found their seeds in their feces.

Indonesians, who wanted to turn this repulsiveness into an opportunity, started to collect and clean the coffee beans in the feces of civet cats. The cleaned beans were first roasted, then ground and then brewed to drink.

Kopi Luwak, which consists of the Indonesian words “kopi” meaning coffee and “luwak” used for the civet cat breed, is called Luwak coffee in Turkey. This type has a ground-like structure similar to Turkish coffee. Those who have tried it compare its taste to chocolate and say that it is very easy to drink. The reason why it is not bitter like other coffees is the stomach acid of luwaks.

The coffee called Kopi Luwak, which remained a secret of the locals for a long time, was noticed by the Dutch colonists. Kopi Luwak was the new favorite of the Dutch, who loved the taste of coffee that underwent an interesting process. More interestingly, Kopi Luwak, which is the most expensive coffee in the world today, attracted attention with its expensive price even during the colonial period. Coffee, spread around the world by the Dutch, is offered for sale in almost all distinguished coffee shops today.
